History Of The Site
Historically Tbilisi and its area- Meidani- was one of the consisting parts of the Great Silk Road and for today it is the connecting energetic and transport main crossroad.
Meidani is one of the central squares of the ancient district “Kala”.
On the Tbilisi plan by Vakhushti Batonishvili this site is marked as Fortress Square.
The Georgian kings settled exactly here, at Kala. Noblemen and the Patriarch settled near the King. Here, at this area, the institutions were also located, the mostly part of the churches, the rows of the workshops, saloons (“dukani”- Georgian pubs) and Caravansaries.
The Kvemo (down) Meidani was the center of the down town (later- Shaitan Bazaar, Meidan, for present – Vakhtang Gorgasali Square). “The Events Square was simultaneously the Meeting Palace and also served as the Market place” (Jean Chardin’s words).
“In no part of the world you can see so many foreigners from various countries as here… Here you will meet Armenians, Greeks, Jews, Persians, Indians, Tatars, Moskovits and Europeans” (Jean Chardin's words)
Exactly at today’s Meidani entered trade caravans from the East.
It was easy to cross the Mtkvari river at Metekhi Fortress. Here was the bridge and after crossing it the caravans took their route to the West through Meidani and Caravansaries.
We can declare that Meidani is one of the oldest business centers in Caucasus.
Beginning from the IV, V centuries up to today here gathered the representatives of various businesses.
Different kinds of activities were and still are developed at Meidani.
